The Things In Life That Are Things

August 15, 2008

I‘ve spent freely over the past month or so, buying (more than) a few things that I’ve wanted for a while. By any reasonable standard, I’ve been lavish. I haven’t bought any diamonds or Escalades, but I’m surprised at how I suddenly own an array of nice things. They’re wants, not needs. I like them. I really think the new tennis racquet has helped improve my game.

Despite all these new things, I was really stressed out on Wednesday. Shan and I had just returned from a trip to Maine on Tuesday night and I faced a short week densely packed with work and catching up. Today I’m not so stressed because a few other things (that can’t be bought) came to the rescue:

  • My wife
  • Music
  • Friends
  • Riding bikes at night
  • Walking home from surfing in the dark, barefoot under orange streetlights, crickets chirping under palms
