It’s Raining So Hard in this City

Commute.
It’s almost 6:30 and I have to go home, so this will also be brief. Eric, a guy who we all met about a week and a half ago, showed up again in Rio yesterday after a trip to the northeast. His host family had some sort of complication and he was left homeless for his last day in the country and he got to sleep over at my place.
We met up after I got home from work and ate dinner at the nicest authentic Brazilian juice bar/grilled cheese sandwich place I’ve found yet. Brightly lit, steaming coffee pots, a display case of sweets, a long menu of fresh tropical juices (I had acerola/orange/beet, and orange/carrot), and a grill in the back. I should do a whole entry on this place. I will. In fact, I’m not too happy with the last few posts and I’m determined to avoid these hasty daily recaps and attempt some more pseudo-journalistic reports on certain aspects of life down here. Stick around, things are going to change around here.
Anyway, we ate dinner and walked through a surprisingly rainy evening to El Guapo Loco, which is a Baja Mexico themed bar/restaurant about two blocks from my house. We were to meet Carolina and a few other kids there but no one else showed up. We talked the night away while kids filtered into the bar until it was absolutely packed and we couldn’t hear each other anymore and left.
Oh, but one more thing about the bar. They were showing ESPN in the bar and what showing? The WNBA. I couldn’t believe it. The Tour de France, a truly international and truly sporting magnificent event, is going on and ESPN International barely touches it so they can show WNBA? The other time I tried to catch Tour highlights on ESPN they were showing a rodeo championship. Instead of showing the best sporting event of the year, they show two of the worst.
Enough of that. I’ve got to get home. Some of you might be interested in the notes I’ve published of Seymour Papert’s speech in Rio last Friday. You can see them here: Part I & Part II
Oh, and I’ve also got a running photos page going here. Leave comments, more to come
