Let My People Go Surfing - Yvon Chouinard

I'm glad that you read it and I agree, it's easy to be inspired by Yvon and the Patagonia story. I read it two weeks ago.

In all honesty, I think the history of Patagonia is one of the most wonderful business stories there is. Chouinard is a guy to look up to. His environmental philosophy came out of ditching his production of pitons when he saw the effect they were having on El Capitan in Yosemite. And he builds things to last - his most coveted customer is a repeat customer. His whole goal is to make nature his office. Everything should be made by Patagonia.

Let's all start companies like Patagonia, and all go surfing!

I'm really flattered that so many people (3 now!) have expressed interest in McCloud's book after reading this post. I'm mostly flattered because it means they read the post.

It won't disappoint. Geoffrey, I'm particularly excited to have you read it because I wish more government-esque people would think more broadly and deeply about communication. McCloud's book is very deep and very broad. So good!

A friend just convinced me to share her resolution of reading more books this year (25!). I have the advantage of having no desire to read most blogs on my own time (present company excluded, of course). The only non-fiction I had on my list was The Visual Display of Quantitative Information by Tufte. Until now. Understanding Comics just got added. The Design of Everyday Things has actually been in my get-to stack for a while, but I'm going to let that one come to me on its own time...

My stack of "To Read" books is currently out of control but I still just purchased that Scott McCloud book because.. why not?

I read a quote somewhere once that said to surround yourself with unread books - holding on to read books as trophies isn't going to help educate yourself. Something along those lines.
